PRESS RELEASE

FESTIVAL TAKES A BREAK IN 2012

After several weeks of deliberation, the Committee of The Salcombe Festival have voted to take a break with the town’s popular celebration, so there will be no event in 2012. Chairman, David Cohen reports:

“These are difficult and uncertain times, and unless we can build on the project with optimism and support; it seems best we ‘take stock’ for a few months.

The recent festival was deliberately designed to trial ‘change’; and I know it pleased very many people, including sponsors. The concept of returning to a music and maritime weekend – in our case with classic boats; set a popular template; but there were (of course) disappointments; with the early closure of music on Whitestrand being the most controversial.

In truth I received several quite unpleasant reactions to the trial and programme; and ‘for what it’s worth’; I can easily sympathise with those concerned. It’s just that there’s a flip side to the ‘coin’ which begins with the fact it costs over £20000 to promote a weekend which is ‘full on’, and for that amount to be raised, managed and made into an event; we also need a pro-active committee with available time; and in greater numbers.

We knew from early on that ‘staffing’ the show would not be available to us in June; and in accepting these constraints; we therefore took time to consider if there was, in any case, a better festival to ‘design’ for the town, which is what we explored.

At a personal level, I believe the ‘trial’ produced a truly wonderful new formula and I’m certain there’s a niche festival to be ‘made for Salcombe’. However, it will be down to the team, including new members, to decide if they share that opinion, and then plot the way forward in the coming months. So for the time being; the position is to Watch this Space on the Festival Website and ‘please’ lend your thoughts as to how, when and in what ‘shape’ we might return!”
