A CELEBRATION OF MUSIC AND SAIL

Holy Trinity Church

We are delighted to welcome back to Salcombe Festival after their outstanding reception in 2009 the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO) who will be playing at Holy Trinity Church, Salcombe on Friday 11th June. Comprising young musicians from all over the county, the Orchestra, which is divided into a junior and senior section, perform a wide range of big band jazz music, ranging from the swing of the 1930s through to the more progressive jazz of Buddy Rich and Stan Kenton. Last year the standing-room-only audience was delighted by the solo singing of three of the girls from the orchestra, and indeed by the extremely high standard of musicianship which provided us all with great enjoyment. In 2007 the orchestra performed at the Royal Albert Hall, as part of the National Youth Prom.

On Saturday 12th June the church will again be packed to the rafters to enjoy a concert entitled ‘A Celebration of Song’, with a wide range of musical singing styles. The Alvington Singers under their director Alistair Durden,  will take the first half of the programme with a selection from, among other composers, Mozart, Johann Strauss, Edvard Grieg and Elgar. After the interval the new local Salcombe Gospel choir, Honest Gospel will give us a recital of traditional gospel close harmony singing. This group was formed in February 2009, and meet at Holy Trinity Church, Salcombe every Thursday evening at 7.30 pm and welcomes all comers to come along and enjoy singing. And their enjoyment of their singing is very evident from the sheer fun which they give their audience during their performance.

The evening will come to a close with a performance of male four part close harmony singing by Iowa 4, a group of local men whose repertoire covers Gospel music, traditional close harmony singing and even barbershop quartet.

Final start times for each concert will appear on posters around the town nearer the week-end of the Festival, and also of course on this website.
